Graduate Talks inspire UWTSD Computing students

Every year it is lovely to receive messages from Graduates who would like to return to the School to give something back. These Graduates are doing well, they have established successful Careers and volunteer to come back to the School to talk with our students. Often they themselves were inspired and given employment opportunities by other Graduate talks during their time with us at the University. Our graduates work in countries all over the world, have exciting careers and fantastic lifestyles. There are a lot of opportunities in the field of Computing & Technology, globally and locally – more than ever before.

Today we welcomed back one of our Computing Graduates Nathan Dickinson (Product Technical lead at Vizolution) to share hints & tips for Uni and Career success along with his colleague Simone Cuomo who spoke about exciting career opportunities for our Graduates.

Nathan completed his Computing degree with us in 2012 before starting his Career as a Software Developer with the NHS Wales Informatics Service (NWIS), he quickly became a Senior Software Developer with NWIS 2014 before starting as a Senior Developer with Vizolution in 2016. Nathan quickly went on to become a Lead Developer with Vizolution and a Product Technical Lead in 2017.

To encourage students Nathan says “Don’t let anyone ever tell you that you are lucky, you have worked hard and deserve your place here at Uni” … “In the words of Buzz light-year ‘To Infinity and Beyond!’ dare to dream and never give up, if you set you mind to it you can do it!”.

Vizolution is an exciting 21st Century Tech company based in Swansea that provides excellent benefits and a great place to work. We have some exciting events coming-up that you might be interested in. The events are fantastic opportunities to meet new people, learn new sills, increase your network and very often lead to great employment opportunities.

  • Swansea’s Tech Start-up Weekend will start on Friday 21st November at 6pm through to Sunday at 8pm. If you are looking to start a business or gain some business start-up experience this event is for you. Great Prizes available and Great experience to enhance your CV. + You will be provided with free breakfast lunch dinner drinks and snacks all weekend to keep you going + FREE PIZZA ;-). The event is taking place at the Dylan Thomas Centre in Swansea (located behind Sainsbury’s), we are meeting at 6pm on the 21st Nov. Tickets normally cost £35, however if you are a student of the School of Applied Computing UWTSD you go for free. To reserve a place simply e-mail james.williams@sm.uwtsd.ac.uk.   • Code Clubs are running up until Christmas. Code Club is an opportunity for all people regardless of coding experience to get together and learn about different aspects of coding. Each club begins with a guest speaker sharing their experience of being a developer, followed by an introduction to a topic and a few challenges on Coderbyte. The club is BYOD (bring your own device) so please bring along your laptop or Mac book and we’ll supply the pizza! We meet one Thursday per month, between 18:00-19:30, in the TechHub Swansea.   • Software Development Round Table, A monthly software development meet-up to discuss technology, practices or whatever else takes our fancy. The meet is on the last Monday of every month. Next meeting is on Monday, November 24, 2014, 7 to 9:00 pm. If you’re using some new technology you think others would be interested in, if you’ve got a design or some code you’d like to discuss, if you’d like to discuss a specific practice, a problem you are having or you’d simply like to see what others have got to say – come along and join in. This is an informal session, you don’t need any particular experience and you don’t need to have suggestions – just bring yourself. For more information please click-here.

Industry Guest Speakers: Grant Armstrong & Sion Williams

Two of our Graduates Grant Armstrong and Sion Williams return to the School on Friday to talk about their Careers to date including how they got their first jobs which will be very useful for our current students.

  1. At 11am Grant Armstrong will be talking about his experiences as a software developer working for both Acentic (Hotel TV and hospitality technology) and Aria Networks (Network capacity management software).
  1. At 3pm Sion Williams will be talking about his work as a build and release engineer working at both the Office of National Statistics and Liverpool Victoria.

The talks will include some biographical material about how the students got their first jobs and also included will be information about interesting/upcoming technologies they thing graduates should be aware of and tips for those entering the industry.
